2nd Creative Commons Algeria Chapter Meeting – September 24th, 2019

The Second Creative Commons Algeria Chapter meeting was held at the University of Bejaia on September 24th, 2019. The meeting was inline with the broader agenda mentioned on this link: https://oaalgeria.wordpress.com/2cc/ .  After a welcome message greets participants, Prof. Kamel Belhamel, Algeria chapter lead, has given a session on the history and mission of Creative commons organization. This organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. All Creative Commons licenses have many important features in common. Every license helps creators to retain copyright while allowing others to copy, distribute, and make some uses of their work – at least non-commercially. In his presentation, Kamel Belhamel has encouraged the participants to become members of the Creative Commons Global Network and help restructure the CC-Algeria chapter. Around 35 participants from 48 people signed up to join in the meeting. Almost of them are PhD and Master students. The preparation of the meeting started over a month by CC Algeria members (Miss Nour, Sonia and Chiraz). Some participants sign up for different activities (advocacy, outreach, open Access and OER development). They are Interested to understand more about CC licenses and become a part of the chapter.

• Algeria chapter website will be especially focused on open access, open science, open education  and creative commons licenses.

• As participants from academia, all discussion were focused on open access journals, open science, open education and on how to choose CC license. During CC Algeria chapter meeting, a flyers  were distributed.

Gender Disparity to Digital Technologies Access in Rural Regions of Algeria

Generally,the access to the Information and Communication Technologies in Algeria is not completely accessible for women in rural regions, this is mainly due to the fact that those regions are not equipped with networks and relays such as the telephone line; Internet connection…). Also, the lack of financial means for an internet subscription and the access to technology. Add on this, the no mastery of computer tools and illiteracy for a certain segment of the population because of the attachment to traditions and gender disparity puts the woman in a position of inferiority compared to the man. Creating barriers on gender,  some locality which prevents her to have sufficient freedom to travel or go to school.

In this proposal, we will discuss the activity of our group of creative commons Algeria chapter on how promoting openness and the concept of sharing for the women in rural region, also on how to prompt discussions around the way  in which women  can  participate to the open knowledge online and digital technology.

Pourquoi Creative Commons Open Access Algeria?

Le Creative Commons Open Access Algeria milite pour  rendre l’information scientifique accessible à l’ensemble des communautés scientifiques. Ce but se traduit par un accès gratuit, intégral et généralisé, sur Internet, aux articles de recherche.
Son objectif principal est d’accompagner les revues scientifiques publiées en Algérie et en Afrique .

Les objectifs de l’Open Access peuvent en général être atteints par deux voies différentes et complémentaires:

• à travers la publication d’articles sur des journaux fonctionnant selon le modèle Open Access;
• avec l’auto archivage sur des serveurs institutionnels.

Le mouvement  Open Access est largement soutenu et mis en pratique par plusieurs pays et institutions, comme montrent la «Déclaration sur l’accès aux données de la recherche financée par des fonds publics» de l’OCDE et les listes de signataires de l’Initiative de Budapest pour l’Accès Ouvert (BOAI) et de la Déclaration de Berlin.
